3.12.2006-
The weather for today's final round at Pearl Country Club was
overcast, windy and cold. 21-year-old Japan amateur Toru
Nakajima a Jr. at Waseda University in Tokyo carded 4
birdies, 12 pars and 2 bogies for a closing round of
2-under par 70 to win his first amateur tournament some
3,800 miles away from home. Nakajima's 54 hole total was
209, 6-under par (68-71-70). Nakajima said after his
victory, "Good putting was the key and Pearl's layout
fits my eye." So what is he doing playing in the Hawaii
State Amateur? He said my friend from Japan who plays in
it annually told me about the tournament and I decided
to play in 2005. For his first try he placed 2nd and a
year later... he's holding the trophy. I also asked him
why he hasn't played in the Hawaii Pearl Open, he said
he never had a chance to but he wants to in 2007.
Brandan Kop finished
with a 1-over par 73 and a tournament total of 1-under
par 214 for the runner up spot while Tadd Fujikawa
was third 71--216 1-over par.
