Hawaii State Amateur Stroke-Play Championship- History

back | tell a friend

In 1928 a year after opening, Waialae Country Club sponsored two tournaments 1. Hawaiian Open (some players from outside of Hawaii came over by boat to play like Gene Sarazen) and 2. Hawaiian Amateur Stroke-Play Championship. In 1929 Frank Atherton a member of Oahu Country Club donated a trophy that would be awarded to the winner of the Hawaiian Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, the tournament was renamed to the Atherton Cup Medal Championship that went on from 1929-1949. Each winners name was inscribed on the cup year after year. In 1945, 7-time winner Arthur Armstrong was given the Atherton Cup Trophy, the trophy's where a bouts was unaccounted for, for a while and was recovered in San Francisco and is currently on display in the Hawaii State Golf Association’s office in Honolulu. The Hawaiian Golf Association (HGA) was formed at Oahu Country Club on October 21, 1930. In 1933 the HGA took over the management of the Atherton Cup and when the HGA’s last president died the HGA also came to and end (the year is not available). From 1950-1963 the tournament was not played for unknown reasons.

In 1964 Dave Carter restarted the Hawaiian Golf Association and with that restarted the Hawaiian Amateur Stroke-Play Championship. Norman Crowell took over the directorship duties of the stroke-play tournament from 1982-86 at Waialae Country Club.  Max Winter the owner of the Minnesota Vikings football team and a member at Waialae Country Club donated a trophy to be awarded to the winner and like the Atherton Cup each winners name would be inscribed on it, it was called the Winter’s Cup. The last tournament to be played at Waialae Country Club was in 1986 won by Les Uyehara.

In 1987, the tournament moved from Waialae Country Club to Pearl Country Club where it still resides. The tournament is known today as the Hawaii State Amateur Stroke-Play Championship and is under the direction of the Hawaii State Golf Association (HSGA).
