Greg Meyer 26th Hawaii Pearl Open Champion

Jonathan Ota 26th Hawaii Pearl Open Low Amateur
|
2.8.04- Local boy
Greg Meyer of Pearl Country Club
closed with a 5-under par 67 today to successfully defend his title. Meyer
rolled in a 12 foot tweeter on the last hole to seal the deal. With this
win, he is now a four-time champion ('87, '88, '03 & '04) and is two wins
away from tying David Ishii's "most
wins" record of six wins. Meyer battled with two-time champion
Kiyoshi Murota and pulled off the win with
new clubs that he wasn't use to as his regular sticks were stolen from his
home this past Wednesday. Low amateur went to Kauai's Jonathan Ota
who started the day at 1-over par for the tournament and lit it up with a
6-under par 66 today to finish at 5-under par 211 good for T20.
Michelle Wie almost achieved her goal of
being the low amateur but was 3 strokes shy this year, perhaps she will do
it next year? Wie and the rest of the field could look back at hole #13 the
194 yard par 3 as it once again played as the most difficult with a stroke
average of 3.38, last year playing to a 3.64 stroke average. Wie bogied the
hole three days in a row.

2.7.04-
48-year-old Japan Professional Kiyoshi Murota a
two-time Pearl Open Champion ('02 & '97) fired a second round 7-under par 65
(68-65--133, 11-under par) to lead by two shots over 42-year-old Don
Berry of Minneapolis, MN who fired a bogey
less second round 4-under par 68 (67-68--135, 9-under par). Murota carded 1
eagle, 6 birdies, 10 pars and 1 bogey today where course conditions were
excellent for scoring. 3 shots off the pace T3, two golfers including local
boy Greg Meyer the defending champion
and Brett Wayment of Logan, Utah who
are both 8-under par 136 respectively. Michelle Wie
stormed back today in round two where she was 5-under par thru her first 8
holes. Wie managed a 1-over par for the remaining 10 holes to shoot a
4-under par 68 for a two round total of 2-under, 142. The final round tees
off tomorrow starting at 8:00am on #1 & #10 with the leaders going off #1 at
9:48am. Wie will get her final round started on #1 at 8:18am in a group with
3 other local boys, Joe Phengsavath,
Kevin Kim and Jim Seki.
