11.7.2004—The weather at Turtle Bay was great today, similar to yesterday
except the wind kicked up a bit from the south for a little while then died
out. Former UH Manoa Golf Team Member 22-year-old Matt Kodama of Las
Vegas, NV put the pedal to the metal today and fired a final round of
4-under par 68 on the Arnold Palmer course to seal the deal. Kodama’s
closing round consisted of 1 eagle, 3 birdies and a bogey. Kodama finishes
the tournament with a 36 hole total of 135, 9-under par (67-68) and led the
field with 80.6% greens hit, 57 putts, a driving distance average of
309 yards and was the only player to card an eagle. Brandon Abreu of
UH Hilo shot two steady under par rounds of 71 and a tournament total of
142, 2-under par good for the runner up spot while Neal Takara rounds
out the top three firing a solid final round of 1-under par 71 on the Palmer
course and finishes in 3rd place (73-71—144, even-par). It took 3
playoff holes to decide the winner of the A-Flight as 56-year-old Terry
Thompson owner of the famous Kua’aina Burger Shops and Robert Oda
were tied after regulation play at 9-over par 153 respectively, Thompson won
with a par. In the B-Flight 46-year-old John Dowd Turtle Bay Resort’s
Director of Marketing fired 79-73—152 8-over par in his backyard to top the
leader board and the C-Flight winner was 43-year-old Joseph Lee with
a total of 165, 21-over par (84-81). I’d like to thank Matt Hall, PGA
Director of Golf & Larry Kiel Head Professional at Turtle Bay Golf
Club and the rest of their staff and all the players for your continued
support.
11.6.2004-- The
story for today was what would the weather be like on Oahu specifically at
Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore? Forecasters were reporting that the
weather would be the same as yesterday. Having said that, it really rained
and stormed today at Turtle Bay if you're talking about birdies and long
drives on the golf course! Former UH Manoa Golf Team Member, 22-year-old
Matt Kodama of Las Vegas, Nevada
lit it up today on the George Fazio course raining 6 birds on his card for a
first round of 5-under par 67 in the 2004 Turtle Bay Amateur to top the
leader board thru 18 with 18 to go. What about thunder? Yea there was
thunder alright how about a thunderous driving distance average of 318 yards
by Kodama. The weather, seriously speaking was awesome, your standard Hawaii
daily forecast (mostly sunny with a chance of showers highs in the upper
80's and lows in the lower 70's) with the exception of the wind, no wind, so
it was very humid thus making for favorable scoring conditions in which
Kodama took full advantage of. Three shots off the pace recent Amatour
Hawaii Major winner Sam Rodriquez III who shot a 2-under par 70 and
rounding out the top three, Brandon Abreu, 1-under par 71. In the
A-Flight Robert Oda leads at 1-over par 73, B-Flight John Dowd
7-over par 79 and in the C-Flight Joseph Lee 12-over par 84.
