More information on the Governor John A. Burns Challenge Cup

 

1.  THE GOVERNOR'S CUP IS HAWAII'S VERSION OF THE RYDER CUP.  IT IS A CONTEST BETWEEN THE TWELVE TOP POINT WINNERS IN DESIGNATED TOURNAMENTS FOR THE PROS AND AMATEURS RESPECTIVELY.   THE FORMAT IS TWO 18 HOLE MATCHES ON THE FIRST DAY, BEST BALL AND THEN A SCOTCH MATCH WHERE 2 AMATEURS TAKE ON 2 PROS.  THE SECOND DAY IS THE INDIVIDUAL MATCH PLAY CHALLENGE WHERE THE TWELVE MATCHES USUALLY DETERMINE THE WINNER.

 

2.  ANYONE WHO PLAYS IN CHAMPIONSHIP FLIGHT IN DESIGNATED TOURNAMENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR AND FINISHES IN THE TOP 15 PLACES ACCRUES POINTS, AND AT THE END OF THE TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE, THE TOP TWELVE AMATEURS AND PROS QUALIFY.

 

3.FOR THE AMATEUR PLAYERS, IT IS AN OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY IN THE SONY OPEN.  THERE IS A QUALIFYING ROUND FOR THE TWELVE AMATEURS AT WAIALAE, AND THE QUALIFIER IS ENTERED IN THE SONY OPEN.

2)  2002 Governor’s Cup will be held in November, 24-26 at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

Note:  Tournaments are based on the number of rounds played.  If a 54-hole tournament is shortened to 36 holes, points will be allocated based on 36 holes. Points are added and then divided among tied players.  Winners of the State Amateur Stroke Play, Manoa Cup Match Play, and Amateur winner of any “Open” tournament automatically qualify for the 12 member Governor’s Cup team.  The committee also reserves the right to select one member of the team to reward an outstanding performance in competitive golf during the year, especially in national or international competition.  For more details, please call Phil Anamizu at 523-9850 (amateur team coordinator).
