9/15/02- Kauai's Shannon Sibayan fired a closing round 1-under par 71 and a tournament total 3-under par 213 (69-73-71) for the wire-to-wire win. It didn't come easy as Sibayan started the day with a 5-stroke lead only to see it vanish and found himself in a tie with a charging Randy Shibuya. From this point on it was a dogfight but the 29-year-old Sibayan of Kauai dug down deep and grinded it out for the win. On the par-3 16th hole Sibayan saved a huge bogey as he was only leading Shibuya by two shots overall heading into the hole. Sibayan's tee shot missed the green to the right and then he chunked his second shot into the green side bunker. Shibuya's tee shot was short left and he chipped up to within two feet. Sibayan blasted out to about 8 feet where he drained the bogey putt while Shibuya made par. Sibayan went birdie/par while Shibuya pared in on the last two holes. Sibayan in his champion's speech gave thanks to his wife on Kauai especially, saying, "if it wasn't for her he wouldn't have been here!" Runner up honors to Randy Shibuya who fired a tournament low 4-under par 68 and a tournament total 1-under par 215 (75-72-68)! Rounding out the top three improving two spots, Joe Phengsavath who closed with an even-par 72 and a tournament total 5-over par 221 (71-78-72).
