What Makes the Manoa Cup the most
prestigious amateur tournament in Hawaii, possibly
the world?
There
are several reasons;
1. It’s
history & tradition. The oldest continuous golf
tournament in Hawaii played since 1907. The Manoa
Cup is behind only the U.S. Open, U.S. Amateur and
The Western Open making it the 4th longest running
tournament in the Nation. The competitors must walk
during the match-play portion of the event. The
venue Oahu Country Club, it’s staff & members who
annually deliver first class hospitality and
services to competitors, the tournament director &
his staff, the media and others.
2. The winner will have accomplished a great feat,
which demands unprecedented respect amongst his
peers, the golf community and others alike. Believe
me this is no walk in the park by any means rather a
hike up Mauna Kea is more fitting! The reason being
is that Oahu Country Club is not a flat course, its
built on a mountainside with steep inclines,
declines and because of this you never seem to have
a flat lie. We all know that the game of golf is
played between the ears for the most part so this
event will put tremendous pressure on one’s mind in
addition to one’s soul, body, golf game and
duration. For those of you who don’t play golf, it’s
like playing chess against your opponent while
hiking up Mauna Kea. As you become more tired, your
thinking starts to diminish as well. Once this
starts to happen, it becomes extremely difficult to
stay mentally positive and make good sound golf
decisions. And if this is not enough, you still have
to remember you have an opponent who is trying to
take you out. So one endures all of this and claims
victory over his opponent what a relief you’re
thinking…
but wait there’s
more it was only the first match, five more matches to go
(8 rounds)… in five
days!
3. The
local media attention this event receives is second
to none. Most all-major local media organizations
cover the event; TV, Print, Radio, and Internet.
4. The
Tournament Director, Mr. Jay Hinazumi. His
professionalism and experience for running the
tournament ensures that a first class event in every
aspect is the only output.
